Your first and most most important SEO tip is to select keywords wisely.

First, brainstorm for keywords – make a short list of keywords that you want to use – and which you believe visitors are likely to use to find your site. Now, plug those keywords into a keyword search tool, such as Google’s Keyword Tool.

When using the tool, you should consider your optimization efforts as one big ad campaign. Therefore, break down your keyword creation into separate ad groups with similar keywords: for example, if I owned an online gambling-related, I may create separate “campaigns” for “poker”, “blackjack”, “craps”, etc, letting the tool pull up relevant keyword results that are specifically-associated with that particular campaign word.

Also, when using a keyword tool, start broad, then get specific. Using the above example, analyzing “online casino” would be the broadest way to go, whereas “online bingo halls” would be drilling down to specific detail.

You can check the power of your keywords that you’ve selected – plug your keywords into your search engine’s query line and see which sites appear on the first search page. The sites that show up in the results represent your competition.

One golden rule to always keep in mind when creating content-rich site pages is that in order to achieve consistently higher rankings (i.e. first-page ranking), your pages should contain many relevant keywords, not just a couple. When it comes to search engine optimization, the more keywords, the better. And not just in the body of your page – having relevant keywords in the title of your page will improve page ranking.
